A lot to get to in this week’s episode of Talking Mariners as the spotlight turned to the GM meetings in Carlsbad, Ca., and the national media started catching up with and affirming what we locally already knew, the Mariners would be buyers this winter and that Jerry Dipoto would target big names.
Free agents who Mariners could be ‘opportunistic buyers’ of
Add to this a Dipoto media session that lasted over an hour and there are puzzle pieces and hot stove fuel galore to sort out. This week with James “Boy Howdy” Osborn out I do so with special guest Gary Hill from the Mariners radio broadcast team who brings unique insight to what lies ahead for Seattle.
In this hour-long Mariners conversation, we get into the challenges this offseason will present for the Mariners and strategies we could see Dipoto engage in to land a number of targets. How far could he go with trades, what surprise teams could have impact on the free agent market and when will we see the market unfold.
With Dipoto confirming this week that he is indeed looking to add two starting pitchers, Gary gives his thoughts on possible fits and how they could be acquired. We also take a closer look at the need in the outfield. Dipoto downplayed the importance of adding an outfielder this winter, Gary has other thoughts. I present Gary with the either/or proposition of filling the need at third base or the outfield from the outside. It’s a different look worth considering.
If all of that wasn’t enough, Gary lets us in on his offseason hobby, scarecrow building.
