AAUW Girls of the Month for May
The AAUW Girls of the Month for May are Hannah Kim, Kiara Warton, Kinley Counts and Sophie Klaus.
Hannah Kim is the daughter of Sungtae Kim and Sarah Yoo. She is sister to Youngjae Kim (20). After graduation, Kim plans on attending University of Michigan – Ann Arbor and majoring in biochemistry, so that she can become either a biomedical scientist or a doctor.

Kim was a part of the Cavemen Band, MESA, Teen Court, English Expo, Student Council, and National Honor Society. She also works part-time for Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Carlsbad Community Anti Drug/Gang Coalition. During her high school years, she has been awarded National Merit Finalist, College Board National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program Scholar, AP Scholar, President’s Award for Educational Excellence, Principal’s Court of Honor, Outstanding Achievement in Education, Outstanding Achievement in AP Biology, Outstanding Achievement in Pre-AP English II, Outstanding Achievement in French II, Outstanding Achievement in Pre-AP Biology, Outstanding Achievement in Pre-AP Chemistry, Outstanding Achievement in Pre-AP English I, Outstanding Achievement in Pre-AP Algebra II, and Outstanding Achievement in NM History.
Kiara Warton is the daughter of Richard and Brenda Baber. She is sister to David Baber (18) and Tapanga Warton (19). After graduating, Warton plans on working towards her dream of owning her own bakery.
Warton was a member of the CHS Cavegirl Soccer Program, National Honor Society, and CHS Student Council. Kiara was a 2021 NM Girls Soccer State Champion. She is also in the top 10% of her graduating class.
Kinley Counts is the daughter of Keith and Alison Counts. She is sister to Kooper Counts (13).
After graduation, Counts plans on attending Louisiana State University and double majoring in Entrepreneurship and Studio Arts.

Counts was a member of the CHS Dance Team, Student Council, Honor Society, Senior Committee, Catalyst Youth Group, and runs a small business with a partner called Blue Lemon Designs LLC. Kinley has received the AP Scholar Award, UDA All American Dancer, and Academic Scholars Non Resident Scholarship Award from LSU.
Sophie Klaus is the daughter of Harold and Antoinetta Klaus. She is the sister of Sky Klaus (26), Luke Klaus (24), and Jesse Klaus (16). After graduation, Klaus plans to attend Western New Mexico University and double major in Fine Arts and Business Administration.

Klaus was a member of English Expo, CHS Student Council, and National Honor Society. Sophie is a two time State Champion for English Expo 2021 and was an A Honor Roll student throughout high school. Sophie received Outstanding Achievement in Education, Top Ten percent Award 2019, Academic Recognition Award for Pre-AP English I 2018, Academic Recognition Award for Culinary Arts 2018, Outstanding Achievement in Education Award 2018, Principal’s Court of Honor 2018, President’s Education Awards Program for Outstanding Academic Excellence 2017, New Mexico Association of Student Councils State Conference Delegate, Cheryl’s School of Dance Student of the Year Award 2018, and CSD Outstanding Tap Dancer Award 2018 and 2019.
Sydney St. John is the daughter of Bobby and Kirsten St. John. She is sister to Ryan St. John (15). Sydney plans on majoring in cellular biology at Texas Tech University and then going on to medical school to pursue a career in clinical genetics.

St. John is a three year varsity cheerleader, 2021cheer captain, CHS Student Council Vice President, and National Honor Society Vice President. Sydney has received the Presidential Award for Excellence, A honor roll throughout high school, and was offered a Presidential Merit Scholarship from Texas Tech University.
AAUW Girls of the Month for June
The AAUW Girls of the Month for June are Blair Bowen, Emily Young and Sarah Bernal- McCullough.
Blair Bowen is the daughter of Bobby and Tammy Bowen. She is the sister to Jake Bowen (21). After graduating, Bowen plans to attend Lubbock Christian University and major in Media and Communications.

Bowen is a member of the CHS Dance Team and the CHS Cheer Squad. She is a member of National Honor Society. She also won Ms. CHS this year.
Emily Young is the daughter of Ken and Leisha Young. She is the sister of Ashley (21), Jacob (16), and Zachary (11). After graduation, Young plans on attending NMSU and majoring in kinesiology to be a physical therapist.
Young was a member of the CHS Band, CHS Cross Country, and CHS Track. She is also secretary for the National Honor Society and a member of the Carlsbad First Baptist Church. Throughout high school, Young has receive Principals Court of Honor Award, Outstanding Achievement in Education Award (Top 10%), and All-District Academic Awards.

Sarah Bernal-McCullough is the daughter of Phil McCullough and Olivia Bernal. She has one sibling, Karina Barker (32). After graduation, Bernal-McCullough plans to attend New Mexico State University and major in business with an emphasis in finance.
Bernal-McCullough is a member of the CHS Band, CHS Track, and CHS Cross Country teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been an honor roll recipient.
